in taking care of our own.
Obviously something needs to get done here. Social Security is broke. Penniless. Our wonderful politicians have already spent all the money that was supposed to be in the bank earning interest. To them, it’s a joke. Social Security is for poor people. What do they care? They have big fat pensions, and crooked contacts, and kickbacks, and stock tips, and lots of money.
Stop reading right here if you can’t handle honesty. I’m not going to lie. It’s a mess.
The Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare problems are not going to be fixed easily. Budget projections have them eating up over 40% of GDP in another 25 years. To give you some context, the entire government budget, everything included, stands at only 18-19% of GDP right now. You think you pay too much taxes now? Just wait until your tax rate hits 75%!!! These programs have been way oversold, and way too generous. Unfortunately, there is no chioce but to cut them.
In the old days, a man worked until he dropped dead. He worked when he was young. Then he worked to support his kids. And then he worked to help support his grandkids.
Somewhere along the way, it was decided that a man only had to work 20 years, and could then expect to retire and have everyone else work for him. Twenty years working, then 40+ years off? You have got to be kidding!?!?!?! Even retirement at 67 could mean Social Security benefits for roughly 30 years!
To compound this problem, people are living longer and longer, which means that the years spent not working are getting longer and longer.
To add yet more to this problem, there is the well known baby boomer problem. A large majority is all set to retire at the same time, leaving less than 20% of the work force intact. Instead of the current 80% workforce paying for the 20% retired, it will be reversed.
And last, but certainly not least, are the prices of drugs and health care, which have skyrocketed.
Add them all up, and there just ain’t no friggin way. Not a chance in hell. No way. No how. Not gonna happen. Anyone who tells you otherwise is flat out lying. Period.
The only possible solution to this problem is a combination of:
1) significantly delaying the age of retirement,
2) significantly cutting benefits,
3) generating more revenue. (remove cap and/or raise rate)
Why hasn’t this been done already? Well, because old folks have money, and old folks vote. That’s why. That’s how they got these absurd entitlements in the first place. Politicians bought their votes. Not to mention that Medicare/Medicaid was put into place by the drug companies, who realized that they could get the government to pay for drugs under this program. The drugs companies spent around $700 million last year on lobbying. They are the single largest lobbying entity in the USA.
Your government has already taken all our money. They’ve already made sure that the younger generation will be absolutely broke and penniless. They have already spent the baby-boomer retirement, and ours too. It’s all gone.
Anybody out there under 55? You’ve been robbed blind. The piggy bank is not just empty, it’s already been sold.
I’ll do the best that I can.
